Audience Research

Target Audience

Are main target audience will be between 15 - 30. As this film is a horror/thriller we must make sure the film is suitable for our target audience especially with the film certificate being a 15.

Who will see our film?

The main people that will see our film will be mainly people who are interested in horror/thriller films. Or possibly people who enjoy a tense film which puts you very on the edge.

Who is your Primary and Secondary Audience?

Primary - People who enjoy horror/Thriller films

Secondary - People who enjoy a adrenaline rush or possibly enjoy a drama film.

Fonts for "Gone"

We looked at different possible fonts for "Gone". The First font we used was "28 days later" which we used in our first draft, but after feedback we found this was very common and used in many films. The font we have chosen now which we are very satisfied with is "coolvetica". This establishes the title well and gives a better affect on our film.

This is our first draft title.

This is our second draft title.

Props Research

These are some of the props we used for the shooting of our film "Gone"

Missing Boy Article - The first prop we decided was to create the missing boy poster. We researched on line and found a article about a missing boy and changed all the details so it would suit our story line.

Clothing for Boy - The main boy in the film we dressed him in all black to give a more mysterious and very unseen. This also makes the boy's face stand out also which we wanted to get across so they remember the face.

Strobe Lighting - We used strobe lighting in some of the shots to create a good effect on the boy's face which also with the black clothing also made his face stand out more.

Orange Ball - This ball was used to in-tale with the credits and is also used to establish the story when the boy goes missing.

Tripod - We used the tripod in many different shots to make the shots stable with no un-needed movement.

Institution

Film4 is the instutiton we  will be using for our film. This is very well known Institution which is based in the UK and is a very well known Instuition featuring in films in the UK and across the world. Film4 also has its own digital movie channel which has been involved with the growing of Film4. This is why we have Chosen Film4.

Film Certificate

For our film we must take into consideration what target audience we will be aiming at. Being a horror/thriller genre to bring the most out of these categories we believe that making the film 15+ is the most appropriate age to incincoropate especially the horror side of things.

Gone Posters

Here is the posters we created on Photoshop for our advertisement.

Missing boy voice over

This is the news article that I used to voice over "Gone" to give it a surreal effect. I feel like this was one of the main factors which established our film. Cutting the voice over being done at the right points was vital to make sure it sounds like we are talking about the missing boy in "Gone".

Feedback for Gone first Draft

This is the feedback for our Gone first draft. Overall we received a mix average feedback with the average score being 44 which is the equivalent to a B. Below I have chosen different feedback scores showing high to lower marks. We will take all of our feedback into consideration when creating the final draft of our film.

In the first feedback sheet I have chosen we received 50 this was one of our higher marks received. On this sheet the genre was identified as very evident and the music featured and the news article which was talked over the different parts of the film was also very good.

In the second feedback sheet we received 49 this was one of our just above average marks. The music was also very popular again as was the news voice over also. They also recommend that we place our title of the film into a different piece of the opening sequence.

Our final feedback sheet that I have chosen was one of our lower marks that we received. They commented saying we established the story well but some shots were to dark which we will need to improve.

Shooting Schedule

Here is our shooting schedule, we stuck to this and completed the filming by Friday.  We mostly filmed at Shennans Park as well as the school to get the best shots, mainly shooting after school when it was fairly dark.

"Missing Boy" Article

This is our news article that I created which will feature in our film to make it more of a realistic event. To make the news article more realistic I used the tea bag effect to give it a yellow tint and to give it a old effect also.

MoodBoard

I created this mood board to gain inspiration and ideas to add into our opening sequence. The selections from above feature... The Missing, The Conjuring, The Mist and The Blair Witch Project. These films and pictures relate very much to our film especially with the setting and the very low key lighting from these films. The films all feature some sort of mist effect in the films what we also want to feature when we film our opening sequence to create a mysterious effect.

Title Tasks

Title History: The first clip I watched was to do with the history of the title sequence. This clip was a brief history on well known title sequences throughout the years from the 1933 "King Kong" film to a more recent film "The Social Network". Through out the clip to see the transition from the old to the new title sequences featuring many different films. The clip show's how much technology as changed title sequences over the years with different animations and special effects.

Richard Morrison Interview: The second clip I watched was the Richard Morrison interview, man has done title sequences for Batman, Brazil, Enemy at the gates and the more recent Sweeney Todd. Richard talks about the process of creating a title sequence for a film in this clip. He states throughout that it is very important no to rush in to the process of creating a title Sequence and creating a storyboard and having many different inputs for different shots and animation is very important from all different people for the title Sequence. Richard also hopes that technology doesn't take over too much for the title sequence's as he believes that physical objects filmed before are very important.

The target audience for our film is going to be aged between 15-40, the certificate of the film is going to be from 15-40. From looking at previous horror films which have a similar sense to ours, I gathered some information from films this year which have appealed to the similar target audience which we are trying to gather.  I started looking at a website which showed the 25 top Netflix horror's which are frequently shown.  As netflix has become a much larger network this year for younger a younger audince of around 17-18 this would fit perfectly for some key statistics which may help our film.

5. The Cabin In The WoodsYear: 2011Director: Drew GoddardFor a movie chock-full of twists, perhaps the biggest is that despite all appearances to the contrary, The Cabin in the Woods is a heartfelt love story. Mind you, not between any of the young and pretty college students who tempt fate at the cabin in question. No, this romance is between creators Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, and the scary-movie genre as a whole. A ménage à terror, if you will. Like Scream before it, the film is a simultaneous dissection and celebration of all the tropes to which it pays homage, while also managing to be a superb example of the genre in its own right. The script is vintage Whedon—smart, funny and surprising. Thanks to Goddard’s direction and staging, and despite the film’s very focus on the formulaic nature of horror, it still manages to be tense, atmospheric and jump-out-of-your-seat scary. The Cabin in the Woods may very well be the ultimate schlocky little horror movie.—Dan Kaufman

4. NosferatuYear: 1929Director: F. W. MarnauF.W. Murnau’s sublimely peculiar riff on Dracula has been a fixture of the genre for so long that to justify its place on this list seems like a waste of time. Magnificent in its freakish, dour mood and visual eccentricities, the movie invented much of modern vampire lore as we know it. It’s once-a-year required viewing of the most rewarding kind.—Sean Gandert

3.Let the right one in

 Year: 2008
Director: Tomas Alfredson
Vampire stories are plastered all over American pop culture these days (True Blood, Twilight, The Vampire Diaries), but leave it to the Swedes to produce a vampire film that manages to be both sweet and frightening. The friendship between Oskar, a scrawny, 12-year-old outcast, and Eli, a centuries-old vampire frozen in the body of a child, is a chilling but beautiful story to behold.—Jeremy Medina

2. The Silence of the LambsYear: 1991

Director: Jonathan Demme
In the face of grotesque sequels, lesser prequels and numerous parodies, The Silence of the Lambs still stands as a cinematic work of art among crime dramas. Winning the five gold rings of Oscar-dom (best picture, best director, best actor, best actress, best screenplay) Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of the murderous Hannibal Lecter proves the worth of surrounding one of cinema’s greatest thespians with a stellar supporting team. Director Jonathan Demme deftly wields the brush of that talent to bring audiences into the dark, sadistic world of Dr. Lecter while leaving them gasping at the twists and turns of novelist Thomas Harris’ gruesomely wonderful story. As what happens with all great films, second and
third viewings fail to diminish the ride.—Tim Basham

1. Rosemary’s BabyYear: 1968

Director: Roman Polanski
The most famous of Polanski’s paranoid thrillers, not to mention the most inviolable. The film infiltrates a privileged space of middle-class entitlement and pollutes it with the most extreme evil possible: sweet, unassuming Rosemary (Mia Farrow) is pregnant, but could her baby already belong to someone else? The volatile climax has an answer, and the sequence has remained one of the most celebrated in horror history for good reason.—Sean Edgar
As you can see the films which scored the highest is a rather old film, and this is the most viewed film of 2014 on Netflix, obviously our target audience typically prefer a much newer horror film compared to an old one produced in the 1960s.  Statistics show that 17 year olds specifically prefer jump scares rather than scares which are less startling.

Production Diary

Production Diary

11/11/2014 - Today we got ready our film ideas so they were ready to present for Thursdays lesson to the rest of the group. We all created PowerPoint's as this was the most suitable format. On our presentations we collected different inspirations and ideas and talked about what we would include in our opening scene.

13/11/2014 - Today we pitched our different film ideas to each other to decide what film idea we were going to go with. Jack pitched a drama film to do with a man being convicted of a murder and the film was to ponder on if he committed the murder or not. Tom's idea was a teen drama evolved around drugs and crime which he gained his influences from Noel Clarke's Kidulthood and Adulthood. Then the final idea came from Connor which was a horror which based around a couple who are not able to have children. From this the couple went to take other children to be theirs. We agreed finally that Connor's idea was the best and we decided to go for that for our concept.

14/11/2014 - Today not in our groups we started to do our Title Tasks. This involved watching many different clips and reviewing them. This included a history of film openings and a interview with a man who is very big in the film industry. Our final task was to take screenshots from three film openings and annotate them for every title that appeared such as actors and production companies.

17/11/2014 - Today we adapted the film concept and slightly changed the main story of the film. We took the concept away from the couple who were not able to have children and changed it too a boy who went missing on a winter evening in a park. We then went on too reviewing different film openings as a group to gain inspiration from a number of different films. (In the Picture we reviewed the opening of Casino Royale)

18/11/2014 - Today Connor was creating our marketing ideas to promote our film in a PowerPoint presentation which you can see him doing below. In the presentation he included how he would advertise our film and what he would do to promote it in the best way. Meanwhile Tom looking at our target audience which he was doing by reviewing films in our category and our style of film and comparing them with what audience the films were most popular with.

19/11/2014 - Today we made sure everything was up to date on our blogs so we could get everything out of the way and start with the planning for our film, although we made no progress on the film for the next lessons we can now focus on that.

20/11/2014 - Today as a group we all came up with separate mood boards to compare with each others to gain inspiration to create the different scenes to go on to our story board which we would create in Friday and Mondays lesson. The mood boards for each of us have now been uploaded onto our blogs.

21/11/2014 - Today we began to create our story board going through scene by scene with what type of shots they will be and where the different titles would be located around the frame of the shot. In this lesson the storyboard was nearly completed and would me finished and finalized in Mondays lesson.

24/11/2014 - Today we also worked on the story board for our film. The story board a very long process and is looking to take us one more lesson as we have to cover every shot we have in or opening scene including just slight different frames and where the different titles are involved. During this process we separately evaluated our LAP charts to make sure everything is up to date and correct.

25/11/2014 - Today we made sure everything was up to date on our blogs so we could be ready to film once the story board had been uploaded so everything was  out of the way and start with the filming for our film very soon

27/11/2014 - Today we filmed our story board with the voice over and made sure everything was correct. It took us a few tries for the filming of the storyboard for it to be up to a standard to be ready to be uploaded to our blogs.

28/11/2014 - Today we edited the storyboard on Premiere and made sure every shot for the storyboard was included with the voice over being in time with the shots also. We also designed a news article for the "Missing Boy" which will be included in our film to be a realistic shot. The article will be uploaded on to the blog also.

4/12/2014 - Today we started filming the different shots at John Shennans park which can be seen in our film. We also took shots of the missing boy article throughout the day and the filming of John Shennans park in the early evening to get the perfect day light.

8/12/2014 - Today we started editing the shots we had filmed and got them in order so we could be able to edit all the different shots we got together. Jack also found some news clips of a missing boy that could go into our film.

11/12/2014 - After getting the shots in order for the first draft we realised we needed more shots and shot in the evening around the site in various locations. This would give us the correct time needed for our film and also a variety of shots.

15/12/2014 - On the final day of working down to the deadline, we got all of our shots together and as a group worked right down to the wire. We were not happy with our first draft but now our final draft has been edited we are now happy with our film.

Opening Sequence Influences

For our opening sequence I have reviewed previous films with their opening sequences and try to gain some influences from them.

Seven Opening Sequence

One of my favourite title sequences that I looked at was from the film Seven. I really like the font that has been used in this opening sequence and would very like something similar in our film. Even though this opening does not reveal much about the actual film it does provide actual enigma to make you wonder what the film is actually about.

Casino Royale Opening Sequence

The bond films are very well known for there opening sequences. This is a massive part of the bond films and the music that is used in the sequence always does very well in the music industry just because of the reputation of the Bond series openings. Anyone creating a title sequence can take great influence from the bond films as all of them are done so well. The animations are very impressive in this particular opening with the mix of animation and real life works very well. The font of the credits I am also very fond of. This bond opening is my favourite bond opening sequence.

Catch Me If You Can Opening Sequence

Catch Me If You Can is one of my favourite films and the title sequence is also very impressive. The animation of the titles and how they move across the screen is very impressive. I like how the titles link in with the animations, on those lines this is something that I would like to include in my film as it is very impressive. The sequence also reflects on title as you see two characters chasing each other and them going through many different stages which you see in a bigger light later on in the film, this provides enigma and is all together also a very good opening sequence.

Student Film Evaluation

A Schools Nightmare (58 Marks): In this opening I really liked the different shots in the film. The shots of the car in action was very well done especially when the car goes over the puddle, also when the car is speeding it also shows many different impressive shots as the camera changes angle very well. The only thing that could be better in this opening is possibly adding some dialogue even if it was just a little bit to get a insight into the characters of the film.

The Edge (55 Marks): In this opening the thing I found the most impressive was the title sequences throughout the film this is very good how the titles are attached to certain objects so as the shots move the title sequences move with the object it has been attached to. Also the different shots were very impressive especially some of the tracking shots which were my favorite. As the first one I evaluated I also commented on the lack of dialogue I would also say the same about this clip that it could feature more dialogue to cause a better affect.

Blitz (54 Marks): In this opening clip the audio affects instantly give you the impression of when the clip is based this is a very good affect. Also the scenery that is used is very impressive and instantly gives you the impression of when the film is set. I think that the scenery and audio effects are the best part of the clip. In this clip also there is no dialogue which maybe could be included into the clip.

Representation

This is the way people and events are presented to the viewers. These represntations are created by the producers, these decisions then go through the 'gatekeepers'. The gatekeeper is anyone that is involved in the production of the film. These choose how the characters are finally represented. This finnally goes to the media consumers, this is the general public who are watching the film. We are all unaware of the process of Representation of the characters we automatically have their sterotypes in our head and do not know the different processes such as the gatekeeper process.

Streotypes:

Media Institutions will use stereo types to make the audience instantly get a insight of the characters persoanlity and background. Doing this you instantly know what sort of personality the character has, this is called a visual shortcut.

Archetypes:

This is the complete stereotype when in films in usually very over exaggerated such as 'Shrek' who is an ogre who lives in a swamp.

Countertypes:

This is a representation who challenges the original obvious stereotype. Such different people, places and groups.

Prelim Task

This was some of the feedback we gained from our preliminary task. Overall the general feedback was that it was a very interesting clip, some say that the genre wasn't that clear but it did have a good concept to be a very good story for a film. The shots that sere made in the film were very popular especially the final shot in the film with the strobe effect. The editing was also very popular especially is some shots when the ghosting effect was used. The script used was also popular at the start of the film. Overall I think it was a good and successful effort being one of my first films.

My Premiere Practice

This is my first edit using Premiere, I found the software challenging at first but over time I got more familliar with the software and knew how to work the different tools. For the this task we had to edit a video of dancing bears and make sure we could edit out all the black outs in the clip that we could using the razor tool and the diffrent transistions. Overall over the time using the software doing this task has given me a good insight to Premiere and I feel next time I use it for editing I will feel very comfortable with it.

Juno Opening

This is our Juno Opening scene we have recreated. This was our first filming task we had done and taking that into consideration it did go very well. We did have some trouble's when it came to some shots such as the location of the filming as we needed to find the appropriate background for each shot. Also what camera shot we were going to do as we had to make every shot the same as the Juno opening. Our storyboard that we used as a plan for the shot is accurate when it comes to the picture and the explanation of the shot but the seconds are not exactly correct when you compare our Juno Opening and the plan of the storyboard. The strengths of our group was that we had a very imaginative group when it came to thinking of where and how to do each shot. The filming was good in places but some of the shots were not as stable as others especially when we had to do a panning shot. The weakness in our group was the general discipline within the group. We could of done shot much quicker with how long it took us and this made us shoot the film over two different days. We got all the footage we wanted apart from a couple of short scenes which are very brief but this led us to making the other shots over run to make the other clips of our film fit in with the Juno Opening. I learnt many different skill using the camera such as different shots and what shots are most effective from certain angles and heights. As this is one of my first premiere tasks I am still getting familiar with the software but doing this task I have gained more experience and have discovered different editing techniques. In my opinion the clip matches up well it parts but there are parts where not every shot was covered and some shooting angles were slightly out other than that as a first film I think that it was a success. For my next shot I will improve my shooting skill with the balance and the different angles of the camera, I also need to improve my editing skills but this will come with time as I gain experience with the software.

Film Language Analysis

"Boyz n the Hood"

Straight at the start of the clip you can hear angry and bad lanuage. This immediately makes you question yourself to think what is going on as you cannot see anything at the start of the clip it is just blank. You then go on to hear a car and a gun being fired and alot of comotion taking place as you can also hear sirens. This really makes you think as everything that is going on at the start of the clip is all off screen. After this scene is finished it then becomes on screen and the first thing you see is a stop sign. This indicates that the film director has tried to get across that this crime has to stop happening on and off the film. It then cuts to a group of children walking to school in a very run down neighbourhood, you can tell that it is very run down from the litter that is around the shot and the stray dogs which are feeding from the knocked over bins. It then shows the children discovering the shooting which was heard at the opening of the film. When they discover the shooting it shows their innocence straight away as they seem confused to what has happenned.

"UP"

At the start of the clip you see happiness as a marriage is taking place. The same piece of music carries on playing throughout but it does differ tone and pace in different emotions throughout the clip. You can tell by the characters emotions that there is happiness and excitement by their emotions and interactions as the female in the clip jumps to kiss him and their family celebrates their marriage. They then go to decorating their house and you can see the happiness as they build theire house for their future. Throughout the clip you see happiness throughout as they lay together in a field watching clouds and helping eachother with their job. The clip then turns to sadness as the couple seem to have had a misscarriage, the music in the clip also slows down and the tone is slightly deeper and sad. The music of the clip then goes back to normal as they turn their dream to vacating on holiday to "Paradise falls" which they start to save up for. Many accidents occur which they had to use their money they had been saving for to pay for, but they do not seem to sad they always seem happy as they have eachother in the company. The woman then does the males charactr many times to show the transisions from many years, it then spans out of the tie shot and shows the characers which are now a old age but still shows their happiness.

Film Language

Film language helps you create a base understanding of the characters.
This is split into 4 different sections:
  1. Camera
  2. Sound
  3. Editing
  4. Mise En Scene
Camera:

  • Angle - Birdseye and worms eye, High and low levels
  • Frame - Ranging from a eye/head shot to a landscape long shot e.g. A Mountain
  • Movement - Tilt up and down, Pan left and right, zooming in and out and a tracking shot

Sound:

  • Music - This can determine the current mood of the film
  • Off/On screen - sounds from transitions from frame to frame
  • Diegetic - Sounds actors can hear
  • Non  Diegetic - Sounds that have been edited.
  • Voice Overs
  • Dialogue- Age, tone, gender, accent

Editing:

  • Transition - Straight cut, dissolve, wipes
  • Order of Narrative - When?

Mise en Scene

Mise en scene mean what is in the scene. This is all the information in front of the camera for the audience to help them work out what is going on in the film.

The 5 Elements of Mise En Scene:

  1. Settings and Props
  2. Costume, Hair and Make-up
  3. Facial Expressions and Body Language
  4. Lighting and Colour
  5. Positioning of Characters/Objects in the Frame
Settings and Props
  • The location of the shot
  • Props in the scene or on the characters e.g. A map = Adventure
  • Time of day
  • Weather

Costume, Hair and Make-up
  • This is a big indicator to the characters role in the film
  • This also can give away the genre of the film with how the characters appear
  • What year the film was set

Facial Expressions and Body Language
  • This shows how the character is feeling
  • The mood of the film
  • Relationships Between the Characters

Lighting and Colour
  • The type of lighting indicate the genre of the film
  • Lighting can highlight the main characters in a film
  • High Key lighting - this is very bright lighting this represents usually a film with happiness e.g. Comedy
  • Low key lighting - this is dark gloomy lighting which usually highlights a horror or a sad film

Positioning of Characters/Objects in the Frame
  • Important characters are usually centred
  • Relationship of characters can be portrayed by how close they are together
  • The distance from the camera to the characters

Genre Task

In this task we had to use DISTINCT for four different trailers to decide which genre the trailers fell into.

The four different trailers were

  • Oculus
  • The Guest
  • The Vow
  • The Guardians of the Galaxy
Oculus

For this trailer I have put it into the horror category. You can tell this film is going to be based around the horror genre right from the start of the film. Just by looking at the female character in the first scene you can see the fright inside her just by looking at her eyes. Also the music at the start and throughout the trailer is very frightening as it uses the aspects of anticipation and suggests something bad is going to happen. Then as soon as the mirror deceives her you can tell that the film trailer is advertising a horror film. The low key dark lighting throughout the film also suggests that is going to be a very dark film. Throughout the trailer there are many different shots and most of them are set at night time which also suggests this film is going to be a horror

The Guest

For this trailer I have put it into the Hybrid category(A mix of genres). From the start of the trailer the male looks very mysterious and you suspect that even though he seems a very friendly character you can tell that there may be some sort of twist. One of the other points that stick out in the trailer is the use of guns, this suggests the Action/Thriller side of the film. The music is also very mysterious which once again emphasises the fact of the main male being a very mysterious character.

The Vow

For this trailer I have put it into the Romance Category. From the start of the trailer you see a marriage taking place between a male and a female, also the trailer shows many clips of the couple in very happy times. From the love that is portrayed you can immediately put it into the Romance category. Then the mood of the trailer turns drasticly as the female in the film looses her memory after a horrific accident. By looking at the males facial expressions you can see the hurt inside him but the female is oblivious. As the trailer goes on it starts to get happy again as he tries to make the female fall back in love with him.

Guardians of the Galaxy

For this trailer I have put it into the Sci-fi/Comedy category. From the start of the trailer you see a man who is not dressed to seriously who is soon approached by guards after stealing a object. By looking at the guards and their appearance you can see it is a Sci-fi film. The males reaction from the guards is very humorous which then gives off the comedy side of the trailer. As the trailer goes on there is a lot of comedy throughout which suggests this is not a very serious film. But look at the settings and characters of the film you can see that is going to be based in space.

Feedback of the Powerpoint:

The overall impact we got from our fellow peers was that the base of the film was very good. The title of the film got great feedback getting very high scores. The comments were that the title was very catchy and had a mysterious clue to the film. With the cast we also got given great comments as the cast was so versatile as it had stars from every corner of the entertainment industry. The plot didnt go as well as the first two sections as some people did not agree how far we were approaching the comedy side of the genre. The narrative was a success the overall impact was that it was suitable for the target audience we named at the start. Although they did not say it matched the genre as well as it was matched for the target audience. The plot was said to be very unique but our marketing side of things needs to be improved majourly.

Friday, 5 September 2014

This image shows a man who is dressed very smart looking successful. On the image as the man is slight higher than the rest of the characters also with a mic you start to presume he is on a stage. This also gives off the impression that he is behind the success that is being shown with the confetti and the people celebrating in the background. You then presume that he may be the owner or the manager of a company that has been very successful. The picture also shows many different bright and vibrant colours showing happiness. If the picture had more darker colours and looked quite bleak you would presume the picture had more of a dark story behind it.

Goal II Living the Dream

This opening clip of this film shows Real Madrid losing 3-0 to Barcelona, by listening to the clip it is very dramatic and sad as you listen to the commentators. So as Real Madrid are losing straight away you realise that the film is somehow based around this team. The commentary is in spanish so you are not able to understand them but this somehow makes it very effective just by the tone of their voices. Towards the end of the clip the English commentary starts and the commentator blames the loss all on one man calle Gavin Harris. By this you realise that he will be one of the main characters that is part of the film. The last quote of the intro of the film is "boy do they need some inspiration from somewhere" This suggests that there is going to be another character which is going to come into the film.
