Film Language


Film language helps you create a base understanding of the characters.
This is split into 4 different sections:
  1. Camera
  2. Sound
  3. Editing
  4. Mise En Scene
Camera:

  • Angle - Birdseye and worms eye, High and low levels
  • Frame - Ranging from a eye/head shot to a landscape long shot e.g. A Mountain
  • Movement - Tilt up and down, Pan left and right, zooming in and out and a tracking shot

Sound: 

  • Music - This can determine the current mood of the film 
  • Off/On screen - sounds from transitions from frame to frame
  • Diegetic - Sounds actors can hear
  • Non  Diegetic - Sounds that have been edited.
  • Voice Overs
  • Dialogue- Age, tone, gender, accent

Editing:

  • Transition - Straight cut, dissolve, wipes
  • Order of Narrative - When?
  • Pace - Slow or fast

Mise En Scene:

  • Costume
  • Lighting
  • Actors
  • Make-up
  • Props
  • Setting
