Mise en Scene
Mise en scene mean what is in the scene. This is all the information in front of the camera for the audience to help them work out what is going on in the film.
The 5 Elements of Mise En Scene:
- Settings and Props
- Costume, Hair and Make-up
- Facial Expressions and Body Language
- Lighting and Colour
- Positioning of Characters/Objects in the Frame
Settings and Props
- The location of the shot
- Props in the scene or on the characters e.g. A map = Adventure
- Time of day
- Weather
Costume, Hair and Make-up
- This is a big indicator to the characters role in the film
- This also can give away the genre of the film with how the characters appear
- What year the film was set
Facial Expressions and Body Language
- This shows how the character is feeling
- The mood of the film
- Relationships Between the Characters
Lighting and Colour
- The type of lighting indicate the genre of the film
- Lighting can highlight the main characters in a film
- High Key lighting - this is very bright lighting this represents usually a film with happiness e.g. Comedy
- Low key lighting - this is dark gloomy lighting which usually highlights a horror or a sad film
Positioning of Characters/Objects in the Frame
- Important characters are usually centred
- Relationship of characters can be portrayed by how close they are together
- The distance from the camera to the characters
