BFI Trip

Before we entered the BFI Centre:

On the BFI trip we heard from many different special guests from production companies giving their intake on Media. We gained knowledge with how the real media world works and what has to be done with the production of a movie. We learnt many different interesting facts such as the amount of time that actually goes into a final release of a movie which can be years. Throughout the day the main focus was to do with the 6 main intuitions which are known as "The Big 6" these include:
  1. 20th Century Fox
  2. Universal
  3. MGM
  4. Disney
  5. Warner Bros
  6. Paramount

Student Film Evaluation

A Schools Nightmare (58 Marks): In this opening I really liked the different shots in the film. The shots of the car in action was very well done especially when the car goes over the puddle, also when the car is speeding it also shows many different impressive shots as the camera changes angle very well. The only thing that could be better in this opening is possibly adding some dialogue even if it was just a little bit to get a insight into the characters of the film.

The Edge (55 Marks): In this opening the thing I found the most impressive was the title sequences throughout the film this is very good how the titles are attached to certain objects so as the shots move the title sequences move with the object it has been attached to. Also the different shots were very impressive especially some of the tracking shots which were my favorite. As the first one I evaluated I also commented on the lack of dialogue I would also say the same about this clip that it could feature more dialogue to cause a better affect.

Blitz (54 Marks): In this opening clip the audio affects instantly give you the impression of when the clip is based this is a very good affect. Also the scenery that is used is very impressive and instantly gives you the impression of when the film is set. I think that the scenery and audio effects are the best part of the clip. In this clip also there is no dialogue which maybe could be included into the clip.

Representation

This is the way people and events are presented to the viewers. These represntations are created by the producers, these decisions then go through the 'gatekeepers'. The gatekeeper is anyone that is involved in the production of the film. These choose how the characters are finally represented. This finnally goes to the media consumers, this is the general public who are watching the film. We are all unaware of the process of Representation of the characters we automatically have their sterotypes in our head and do not know the different processes such as the gatekeeper process.

Streotypes:

Media Institutions will use stereo types to make the audience instantly get a insight of the characters persoanlity and background. Doing this you instantly know what sort of personality the character has, this is called a visual shortcut.

Archetypes:

This is the complete stereotype when in films in usually very over exaggerated such as 'Shrek' who is an ogre who lives in a swamp.

Countertypes:

This is a representation who challenges the original obvious stereotype. Such different people, places and groups.

My Premiere Practice

This is my first edit using Premiere, I found the software challenging at first but over time I got more familliar with the software and knew how to work the different tools. For the this task we had to edit a video of dancing bears and make sure we could edit out all the black outs in the clip that we could using the razor tool and the diffrent transistions. Overall over the time using the software doing this task has given me a good insight to Premiere and I feel next time I use it for editing I will feel very comfortable with it.

Juno Opening

This is our Juno Opening scene we have recreated. This was our first filming task we had done and taking that into consideration it did go very well. We did have some trouble's when it came to some shots such as the location of the filming as we needed to find the appropriate background for each shot. Also what camera shot we were going to do as we had to make every shot the same as the Juno opening. Our storyboard that we used as a plan for the shot is accurate when it comes to the picture and the explanation of the shot but the seconds are not exactly correct when you compare our Juno Opening and the plan of the storyboard. The strengths of our group was that we had a very imaginative group when it came to thinking of where and how to do each shot. The filming was good in places but some of the shots were not as stable as others especially when we had to do a panning shot. The weakness in our group was the general discipline within the group. We could of done shot much quicker with how long it took us and this made us shoot the film over two different days. We got all the footage we wanted apart from a couple of short scenes which are very brief but this led us to making the other shots over run to make the other clips of our film fit in with the Juno Opening. I learnt many different skill using the camera such as different shots and what shots are most effective from certain angles and heights. As this is one of my first premiere tasks I am still getting familiar with the software but doing this task I have gained more experience and have discovered different editing techniques. In my opinion the clip matches up well it parts but there are parts where not every shot was covered and some shooting angles were slightly out other than that as a first film I think that it was a success. For my next shot I will improve my shooting skill with the balance and the different angles of the camera, I also need to improve my editing skills but this will come with time as I gain experience with the software.

Film Language Analysis

"Boyz n the Hood"

Straight at the start of the clip you can hear angry and bad lanuage. This immediately makes you question yourself to think what is going on as you cannot see anything at the start of the clip it is just blank. You then go on to hear a car and a gun being fired and alot of comotion taking place as you can also hear sirens. This really makes you think as everything that is going on at the start of the clip is all off screen. After this scene is finished it then becomes on screen and the first thing you see is a stop sign. This indicates that the film director has tried to get across that this crime has to stop happening on and off the film. It then cuts to a group of children walking to school in a very run down neighbourhood, you can tell that it is very run down from the litter that is around the shot and the stray dogs which are feeding from the knocked over bins. It then shows the children discovering the shooting which was heard at the opening of the film. When they discover the shooting it shows their innocence straight away as they seem confused to what has happenned.

"UP"

At the start of the clip you see happiness as a marriage is taking place. The same piece of music carries on playing throughout but it does differ tone and pace in different emotions throughout the clip. You can tell by the characters emotions that there is happiness and excitement by their emotions and interactions as the female in the clip jumps to kiss him and their family celebrates their marriage. They then go to decorating their house and you can see the happiness as they build theire house for their future. Throughout the clip you see happiness throughout as they lay together in a field watching clouds and helping eachother with their job. The clip then turns to sadness as the couple seem to have had a misscarriage, the music in the clip also slows down and the tone is slightly deeper and sad. The music of the clip then goes back to normal as they turn their dream to vacating on holiday to "Paradise falls" which they start to save up for. Many accidents occur which they had to use their money they had been saving for to pay for, but they do not seem to sad they always seem happy as they have eachother in the company. The woman then does the males charactr many times to show the transisions from many years, it then spans out of the tie shot and shows the characers which are now a old age but still shows their happiness.

Film Language

Film language helps you create a base understanding of the characters.
This is split into 4 different sections:
  1. Camera
  2. Sound
  3. Editing
  4. Mise En Scene
Camera:

  • Angle - Birdseye and worms eye, High and low levels
  • Frame - Ranging from a eye/head shot to a landscape long shot e.g. A Mountain
  • Movement - Tilt up and down, Pan left and right, zooming in and out and a tracking shot

Sound:

  • Music - This can determine the current mood of the film
  • Off/On screen - sounds from transitions from frame to frame
  • Diegetic - Sounds actors can hear
  • Non  Diegetic - Sounds that have been edited.
  • Voice Overs
  • Dialogue- Age, tone, gender, accent

Editing:

  • Transition - Straight cut, dissolve, wipes
  • Order of Narrative - When?
  • Pace - Slow or fast

Mise en Scene

Mise en scene mean what is in the scene. This is all the information in front of the camera for the audience to help them work out what is going on in the film.

The 5 Elements of Mise En Scene:

  1. Settings and Props
  2. Costume, Hair and Make-up
  3. Facial Expressions and Body Language
  4. Lighting and Colour
  5. Positioning of Characters/Objects in the Frame
Settings and Props
  • The location of the shot
  • Props in the scene or on the characters e.g. A map = Adventure
  • Time of day
  • Weather

Costume, Hair and Make-up
  • This is a big indicator to the characters role in the film
  • This also can give away the genre of the film with how the characters appear
  • What year the film was set

Facial Expressions and Body Language
  • This shows how the character is feeling
  • The mood of the film
  • Relationships Between the Characters

Lighting and Colour
  • The type of lighting indicate the genre of the film
  • Lighting can highlight the main characters in a film
  • High Key lighting - this is very bright lighting this represents usually a film with happiness e.g. Comedy
  • Low key lighting - this is dark gloomy lighting which usually highlights a horror or a sad film

Positioning of Characters/Objects in the Frame
  • Important characters are usually centred
  • Relationship of characters can be portrayed by how close they are together
  • The distance from the camera to the characters

Genre Task

In this task we had to use DISTINCT for four different trailers to decide which genre the trailers fell into.

The four different trailers were

  • Oculus
  • The Guest
  • The Vow
  • The Guardians of the Galaxy
Oculus

For this trailer I have put it into the horror category. You can tell this film is going to be based around the horror genre right from the start of the film. Just by looking at the female character in the first scene you can see the fright inside her just by looking at her eyes. Also the music at the start and throughout the trailer is very frightening as it uses the aspects of anticipation and suggests something bad is going to happen. Then as soon as the mirror deceives her you can tell that the film trailer is advertising a horror film. The low key dark lighting throughout the film also suggests that is going to be a very dark film. Throughout the trailer there are many different shots and most of them are set at night time which also suggests this film is going to be a horror

The Guest

For this trailer I have put it into the Hybrid category(A mix of genres). From the start of the trailer the male looks very mysterious and you suspect that even though he seems a very friendly character you can tell that there may be some sort of twist. One of the other points that stick out in the trailer is the use of guns, this suggests the Action/Thriller side of the film. The music is also very mysterious which once again emphasises the fact of the main male being a very mysterious character.

The Vow

For this trailer I have put it into the Romance Category. From the start of the trailer you see a marriage taking place between a male and a female, also the trailer shows many clips of the couple in very happy times. From the love that is portrayed you can immediately put it into the Romance category. Then the mood of the trailer turns drasticly as the female in the film looses her memory after a horrific accident. By looking at the males facial expressions you can see the hurt inside him but the female is oblivious. As the trailer goes on it starts to get happy again as he tries to make the female fall back in love with him.

Guardians of the Galaxy

For this trailer I have put it into the Sci-fi/Comedy category. From the start of the trailer you see a man who is not dressed to seriously who is soon approached by guards after stealing a object. By looking at the guards and their appearance you can see it is a Sci-fi film. The males reaction from the guards is very humorous which then gives off the comedy side of the trailer. As the trailer goes on there is a lot of comedy throughout which suggests this is not a very serious film. But look at the settings and characters of the film you can see that is going to be based in space.

Feedback of the Powerpoint:

The overall impact we got from our fellow peers was that the base of the film was very good. The title of the film got great feedback getting very high scores. The comments were that the title was very catchy and had a mysterious clue to the film. With the cast we also got given great comments as the cast was so versatile as it had stars from every corner of the entertainment industry. The plot didnt go as well as the first two sections as some people did not agree how far we were approaching the comedy side of the genre. The narrative was a success the overall impact was that it was suitable for the target audience we named at the start. Although they did not say it matched the genre as well as it was matched for the target audience. The plot was said to be very unique but our marketing side of things needs to be improved majourly.

This image shows a man who is dressed very smart looking successful. On the image as the man is slight higher than the rest of the characters also with a mic you start to presume he is on a stage. This also gives off the impression that he is behind the success that is being shown with the confetti and the people celebrating in the background. You then presume that he may be the owner or the manager of a company that has been very successful. The picture also shows many different bright and vibrant colours showing happiness. If the picture had more darker colours and looked quite bleak you would presume the picture had more of a dark story behind it.

Goal II Living the Dream

This opening clip of this film shows Real Madrid losing 3-0 to Barcelona, by listening to the clip it is very dramatic and sad as you listen to the commentators. So as Real Madrid are losing straight away you realise that the film is somehow based around this team. The commentary is in spanish so you are not able to understand them but this somehow makes it very effective just by the tone of their voices. Towards the end of the clip the English commentary starts and the commentator blames the loss all on one man calle Gavin Harris. By this you realise that he will be one of the main characters that is part of the film. The last quote of the intro of the film is "boy do they need some inspiration from somewhere" This suggests that there is going to be another character which is going to come into the film.
